Abduction and induction are two basic and logical inference forms of reasoning. This paper addresses the intersting question of which form of reasoning needs the other in the context of learning task. It appears that if it is easy to show that abduction needs induction, it is also possible to prove that induction needs abduction in some sense.

Comparing Bandwidth and Self-control Modeling on Learning a Sequential Timing Task

Modeling is a process which the observer sees another person's behavior and adapts his/her behavior with that which is the result of interaction. The aim of present study was to investigate and compare effectiveness of bandwidth modeling and self-control modeling on performance and learning of a sequential timing task. So two groups of bandwidth and self-control were compared. The task was pres...

The Involvement Load Hypothesis and Vocabulary Learning: The Effect of Task Types and Involvement Index on L2 Vocabulary Acquisition

This study builds on Laufer and Hulstijn’s (2001) motivational-cognitive construct of task-induced involvement in learning vocabulary and addresses itself to its strong claim that the depth of processing is the overriding factor in learning words. The paper first re-examines the effect of processing load and then of task type on the initial learning and retention of words. To do so, 60 EFL lear...

Inferring process models from temporal data with abduction and induction

This paper shows how automated abduction and induction can be used to infer logical process models from temporal observations of states and actions. The proposed method employs a non-monotonic learning system called eXtended Hybrid Abductive Inductive Learning (XHAIL) to learn domain axioms in a temporal logic programming formalism known as the Event Calculus (EC). The key benefit of this logic...

An Abductive-Inductive Algorithm for Probabilistic Inductive Logic Programming

The integration of abduction and induction has lead to a variety of non-monotonic ILP systems. XHAIL is one of these systems, in which abduction is used to compute hypotheses that subsume Kernel Sets. On the other hand, Peircebayes is a recently proposed logic-based probabilistic programming approach that combines abduction with parameter learning to learn distributions of most likely explanati...

Assessing Task- based English Language Needs of Medicine Students: Are They Aligned with Pedagogical Tasks in EMS Courses?

Assessing learners’ present and real life language needs can contribute to learners’ active participation in learning processes. , Assessing learners’ task-based needs and aligning them with pedagogical tasks are significant in English for medical purpose (EMS) courses. The main objectives of the present study were to assess learners’ needs and to determine whether they are practiced in EMS cou...
